Happy New Year’s Eve, Eve!

Well, whether you are ready or not, a new year is just around the corner. This is that delicious time of year where we get to reflect and resolve. What did you love about 2010? What will you do different in 2011? What impressed you most about 2010? What will you impress others with in 2011? Are there big changes in store for you? Don’t be afraid of change. Change, and we’ve been told this a buzzillion times, is good! Change is new, its fresh, it’s alive! Yes, change can be challenging but in the end it’s what moves us away from sameness. Sameness is….in my opinion….boring, old, stale. Let’s shake it up together!

Now I know for some, like my sister (sorry, Anne, but the jig is up!), odd numbers are…well…not even…they can seem unbalanced (I, for one, was born in an even year making me an expert HA!) but that doesn’t mean that 2011 can’t have balance (God knows that’s what we all need, right?!). So, in order to balance out my new year, I resolve to add balance to everything I do. I’m not interested in starting anything, finishing anything, quitting anything, losing anything or even promising anything…I’m really only going to focus on balance.

Gary, Boo and I would like to wish you all a blessed new year!

Here’s to Balance!

Jill and Andy.

I squealed when Jill e-mailed me that she was getting married and couldn’t wait to meet Andy and hear about their plans. I’ve known Jill for 5 years and eagerly said “YES!” to being their photographer.  Jill and Andy exchanged vows nearly 3 weeks ago and I got to capture the day and witness all the emotion and celebration through my lens.  And let me just say that I love it when couples involve me in the process. It’s as if they know that I would want to know…and they’re right. When I map out my photography coverage, I get all the details and the order of the day down leaving little to chance. I’m big on spontaneity but key details are…well, key details so don’t be afraid to lay ‘em on me! When it’s important to you…it’s doubly important to me to capture them for you.

You may remember Jill and Andy’s Engagement session from April of this year and here they are as husband and wife. Congratulations you two!

Macy*s Gingerbread Cookie!

Every once in awhile we are presented with some really cool opportunities. For me, this is one of those times. Earlier this year, while photographing Macy*s 2010 Glamorama event in Minneapolis, for Macy*s, I was asked if I could grab a few quick shots of a “dessert” for them and so I whipped up in the middle of the festivities and photographed their “Caramel Apple Oatmeal Cookie” for (what I thought was) a local fall Marketplace campaign.  A poster would soon after go up in all of the Macy*s, with a Marketplace, nationwide.  Several weeks later I asked if I could get one of the posters when they took them down and Susan Johnson (Menu Development Manager, Macy’s Food Division) said “Sure! I’d also like for you to come down and shoot another cookie for our upcoming Holiday campaign poster. Could you please quote us what you would charge for your services?”…”Absolutely!” I said. Going forward with Macy*s has been a real “treat”, dare I say, and testing the product is 1/2 the fun!  Can’t wait to see what I get to eat, I mean photograph, next!

Here’s the Caramel Apple Oatmeal Cookie poster!

I’ve been waiting patiently to announce the most recent project that I shot for Macy*s…the Gingerbread Cookie and Coffee.

This poster is being unveiled today, November 9th, in all of the Macy*s across the country that have a Marketplace.

Being Amanda.

amanda10.907 t6 web 1024x682 Being Amanda. The youngest of 3 means, quite clearly, you rarely get to do things first in the family. It’s either been done, being done or no one gets to do it.  But don’t tell that to Amanda, she’s a trail blazer and doesn’t normally let things stand in her way. You see, being 3rd also means that the bar has been lowered by each previous child making things, sometimes, more attainable.  Now, I’m no parent but I occasionally get the opportunity to “fill in” and my style, well…let’s just say…it’s pretty loose. I even get the “green light” from time to time with some of my nieces and nephews because…well, people trust me…and by people, I mean…my siblings. They trust that I will use my better judgment and not get carried away, make a scene or lose my mind. Yesterday was no exception. It was Amanda’s turn to redeem her (October 22nd) birthday gift from aunt Sue….a new “do” and a photo session.

I’m pretty certain that most 10 year old girls (outside of “toddlers and tiaras”!) don’t get to have highlights put in there hair and then toss on a little mascara and head out to a location and have their own private photo shoot compete with props. Yippee for Amanda cuz that’s just what we did yesterday. Due to the fact that Amanda has 2 older (girl) cousins and an older sister that have received this gift in the past she has a tendency to want to emulate their sessions and often likes to get a little serious. But we have fun too, don’t get me wrong.

We got a late start yesterday and with daylight savings time ending I’d forgotten to plan on the sun setting earlier but we got it done! Being 10 also means that high on her list was getting to a family function on time for cake that afternoon and it set the pace for the shoot! Amanda wanted to hit the same location that her cousin, Jess, hit on Saturday for her shoot so once the hair was perfect we hopped in the car and headed back out to the University of Minnesota’s Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

I love her. Here’s a few of my faves from the day….can’t believe she’s 10 already!

She chose red. Really red!

After much consideration, Jessie decided to go red. It’s fun, playful, vibrant and best of all…it suits her. We’ve tried all kinds of reds…highlights, solid, red-brown, brown-red but yesterday we mixed up an electric copper-red…Framesi (frah-mee’si ) makes a color line called FRAMCOLOR 2001 and this, my red headed friends, is level 6TRP…with some super bright highlights (Schwarzkopf Bleach). This was fun! Getting your hair done is a definite mood changer and propelled the photo shoot! Thanks Jess. I love you.

Jessica~

Today, my niece is coming over to redeem her birthday present…Fresh, new color & cut and an environmental photo session. It’s just something that I do each year for my niece’s birthdays. I like to call it the gift of time…I get some face-time with them and they, in turn, get to look and be FABulous for the day (and have some photos to prove it!). I love the fact that I have a licensed salon space in my home and can concoct ANYthing for anyONE! Truth be told I think it’s more fun for me!

Here are some shots I’ve gotten of Jessica over the past 5 years..WOW!

A little pumpkin goes home….

I received an e-mail yesterday afternoon from one of our area coordinators for NILMDTS. She was looking for an affiliate to step in and take a session for a family in the midst of labor for a 39 week in utero loss…no one was on call. I live near the hospital where they were delivering so I called in and got the information. It would be about 2 hours before they needed me to come in. Gary and I put dinner plans on hold and I drove out. I always seem to arrive early..perhaps nervously eager (even after 5 years of being apart of this volunteer organization) to serve a broken family. I love that God has given me the talent and the tools along with the heart to come along side these families and give them and their babies a future by capturing these tender moments now. Please pray for this little pumpkin and his family as they grieve.

Call to Duty

Well, while my sister (who turned 40 yesterday) would LOVE the opportunity to be summoned for Jury Duty, I was called for a second time. Once, about 6 years ago right after knee surgery allowing me to be placed on the “on-call” list…I was never called. I did, however, get all the closets cleaned out and drawers straightened and the studio painted! So there are benefits to being a captive audience in your own home!

I received another summons, last winter, while I was sitting with my dying mother. I requested a postponement and they granted me 6 months. I knew that October 25th was fast approaching but I was able to work my way on to the “On-Call” status. However, that little dream of mine was short lived. When you are “on-call” in Hennepin County you are required to call in twice a day for 2 weeks; once at 6:30 pm to see if you are needed the following morning and if not you call back in at 12:15 to see if you are needed after the lunch break at 1:30 that very same day. That one is a little stressful! Once you call in and are not needed you can sort of hit the ground running and get some stuff done without worrying. That said, you have to call in again at 6:30pm to see if you need to report in the morning. All in all, I must say, getting on the “on-call” list is a relief but my iPhone has more alarms set to remind me to call in causing that uneasy feeling of when your baggin’ your groceries and someone else’s stuff starts coming down the shoot right after yours..very I Love Lucy-esque! icon wink Call to Duty

My little dream of being on call for 2 weeks was dashed just 2 days in. Last night during my 6:30 check-in call it happened…”Group Number 494 will report at 9am on Wednesday morning.” Oh well, at least I now get to cancel all those alarms and simply head to the courthouse each day now.

Now this is all foreign to me. I never got called 6 years ago and now I’m faced with whether I would go forth and conquer and navigate public transportation or drive myself. Hmmm…the thought of watching The Hangover on my iPhone whilst sitting on a bus riding the shoulder of the freeway all the way downtown suddenly intrigued me. You must know that the only time I’ve ridden a Metro Transit Bus was forth and back to our grease filled, beer drinkin’, people watching state fair! I’ll confess, I was a little nervous. To all you nay sayers…this is where social media comes in handy…I put out a status update on facebook to see if anyone could hold my had through the process of mastering the bus schedule! Thank you Jill White Rumley! She answered back almost immediately and so instead of THAT keeping me awake it was just the 60+ mile an hour gusts that did! :\

So far, and this is just day 1, I’ve learned that 1.) I can get up early in the morning and function. 2.) Public transportation is really wonderful. 3.) People will reach out when you ask for help 4.) You can dress like a human being and STILL not get selected to sit on a jury. 5.) An Andy’s Mint hidden underneath a $7 boxed, dry turkey sandwich does not qualify as dessert…EVER 6.) Lastly (for now), and I should have learned my lesson from all the remote posts I put up on my  mom’s Caring Bridge site, COPY & PASTE everything or you will lose your enTIRE post! :\

The day is just 1/2 over and there is still 45 minutes left of my hour & 1/2 lunch break and they have called 2 panels of jurors (1 group of 18 and a 2nd group of 26) and my name hasn’t been called…so I wait. I’ll continue to do twitter updates throughout my ordeal and I’ll have The Hangover dialogue memorized by Friday!  Oh, one more thing….follow “@shitmydadsays” on twitter…it’s pretty outstanding!  icon biggrin Call to Duty

Kathryn turns 9….and a 1/2!

Kathryn is 9 (and a 1/2!) but don’t let that fool you…she’s wise beyond her years. A very gentle, old soul and best of all…she calls me “Aunt Sue”.  I’ve known her parents for many, many years and Kathryn was a joyful addition to the love that they already possessed. I’ve captured Kathryn each year on or around her, spring, birthday but this year after enduring the devastating loss of my mother I missed the opportunity. We gathered, just a few weeks ago, to mark her 9th birthday! She is an amazing child. I love her.

Portraits don’t have to be stuffy, stiff or boring…are YOU? Of course not. Don’t let someone capture you when you aren’t…well….you. Portraits should be fun, relaxed and most importantly, real. I love the notion of having my portraits “speak” to people…make people grin, laugh…even evoke the occasional tear. Here’s more of Kathryn…

Braeden is one of those handsome young men that while he’s set his sights beyond graduation next spring he’s just not that into the whole “Senior Portrait” thing. Well, problem solved. This year I expanded my collections of traditional Portrait Sessions to include an “Express”. The Express is just that, an abbreviated session that allows me to capture really great images in 30 minutes. Now, this does come with a few options but several changes of clothing and locations are not part of the program as that simply eats into the allotted 30 minutes pretty rapidly. So, come prepared to work diligently and what you will get in return is 8 lightly edited 4×6 proofs and 1, digital file of your choice. Your, unedited, session will be online within a day for you to select from and will only set you back $150.00. You, of course, are welcome to order additional prints and wallets through the site or directly through me.  Isn’t it nice to know that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get what you want?  If the Express is something you haven’t yet considered, contact me to discuss and schedule your Express now.

This offer is limited to High School Seniors.
